How curating a music profile on Imeem led to a lifelong partnership.
It all started in the mid-2000s. I was deep into looking for music to listen to, particularly obsessed with the epic anime soundtracks of Naruto*. That search led me to imeem*, a popular music-sharing platform of the era.
I spent an entire day meticulously curating and customizing my profile page—arranging playlists, choosing themes, and perfecting my digital corner. As fate would have it, that very page caught her eye. Attracted by my music taste and the effort put into my profile, she saw it and sent me a friend request on imeem.
The rest was history.
Naruto is a globally acclaimed Japanese manga and anime franchise created by Masashi Kishimoto. It follows the story of Naruto Uzumaki, an orphaned young ninja who strives for recognition and dreams of becoming the Hokage, the leader of his village. Beyond its intense action and rich characters, the franchise is famous for its iconic, emotionally-charged soundtracks composed by Toshio Masuda and Yasuharu Takanashi, which became a gateway to early digital music sharing for millions of listeners.
imeem was a pioneering social networking and music-streaming website active between 2003 and 2009. It was the first online service to secure licensing deals with all four major record labels (Universal, Sony BMG, Warner, and EMI), allowing users to legally upload, stream, and share full-length tracks for free. Users created music-centric profiles, curated custom playlists, and embedded player widgets on blogs, shaping the soundtrack culture of the early social web before its acquisition and closure by MySpace in late 2009.
